Kannur: Rail passengers were in for a messy ride last Saturday when the busiest day in the week collided with the PSC examinations. Hundreds of passengers at many stations between Tirur and Vadakara returned disappointed as they couldn’t step into the crowded coaches of the passenger trains. The Netravati and the Coimbatore–Kannur passenger trains were so crowded that people were seen standing precariously on the steps. Passengers struggled to get down to their stations with their bags while those boarding the trains couldn’t stand without getting squeezed.
People were even seen standing between the seats. Usually, most trains are crowded on Saturdays and Sundays. However, things got worse when PSC examinations too were scheduled on August 17. Meanwhile, the passengers complained that the crowds could have been manageable if the newly allotted Shorannur – Kannur special was operated six days a week, including on Saturdays. They have been urging the authorities to operate the service on all working days ever since the train was flagged off.
