It might sound unbelievable, but some countries do not have an airport. However, these countries, famous for their thriving tourism industry, have been successfully receiving tourists from all over the world. These are the five countries, that are some of the busiest tourist destinations in the world and often appear on the bucket list of travel lovers, where you wouldn’t find an airport.
San Marino
San Marino which is situated close to the Vatican City is one of the oldest countries in the world. The country, which is located within the boundaries of Italy doesn’t have a coastal line. There is no airport in San Marino as it is a small country. However, San Marino, which has flatter geographical features is connected by extensive road networks. This lets the people of San Marino travel to various parts of Italy. The nearest airport is at the Italian city of Rimini. Even though Rimini is a small city, it is a pivotal transit point for the natives as well as tourists who visit San Marino. You could also reach San Marino via airports in Bologna, Florence, Venice and Pisa.
Vatican City
Vatican City is the smallest country in the world with a population of just under one thousand persons. The country is not geographically big enough to build an airport. Interestingly, it is one of the rarest countries in the world which could be explored on feet. The nearest airports at Fiumicino and Ciampino are just thirty minutes away by train.
Andora
This picturesque country that lies between France and Spain is surrounded by the Pyrenees Mountain ranges. Some mountains are as high as 3,000 metres here. It is dangerous to fly aeroplanes in such areas. That is the reason why there aren’t any airports in this country. However, travellers could use the airports at Lleida, Barcelona and Girona which are around two hundred kilometres away, to fly to other countries.
Monaco
Monaco is the second smallest country in the world after Vatican City. The picturesque country is surrounded on three sides by France. As the country is smaller in area, there is no airport here. Those who wish to visit Monaco could reach the Nice de Asur airport in France and then travel to Monaco via road or boat.
Lichenstein
Lichenstein is a scintillating country with beautiful hills and valleys. It is one of the smallest countries in Europe with an area of just over 75 kilometres. Due to lack of space, it isn’t possible to build an airport here. Zurich Airport which is around 120 kilometres away is the nearest.
