Tourist destinations in and around Idukki are spectacular. But in the middle of these splendid views, there are some other sights that the authorities turn a blind eye to. Apparently, tourists have to endure a lot to see the beauty of Idukki. Dilapidated roads and places without basic amenities reduce the charm of Idukki for tourists.

Suryanelli
Chinnakanal and Suryanelli, which are the most visited places in the district, have no basic facilities. Even after the resumption of Kolukkumala trekking, the number of tourists did not increase due to severe traffic problems and lack of infrastructure. Suryanelli, the gateway to Kolukkumalai, does not even have basic facilities required for tourists. The fact that this place doesn’t even have a tourism information center is a matter of concern. Not even a single bus can reach the Suryanelli area.

Idukki
Arch dam, Vaishali Cave and Hydel Park are some of the popular attractions of the district headquarters. But sadly, no action has been taken to repair the road filled with bumps and potholes that stretches from Cheruthoni to the dam in front of the Medical College. So many tourists vehicles have run into trouble owing to the bad roads. It is left to the mercy of the KSEB to repair the roads.

Thooval waterfalls
Thooval waterfalls is as beautiful as if it flows from the sky. But if you want to see this beautiful sight, you have to negotiate your way through a damaged road. Ezhukumvayal - Thooval - Pattuvalavu road has collapsed, making it difficult for locals and tourists to travel. The road that was tarred years ago has now become rutted. The pits are so big that even pedestrians find it difficult to walk on this road.

Kalvari Mount
This Park is located on the Idukki-Kattappana Road. Hundreds of tourists come here to enjoy the Idukki Reservoir. But the path towards the main road isn’t exactly viable for driving. Some portions have been done in concrete. The rest of it is full of stones and mud. Due to the steep climb, it is very difficult for vehicles to climb over the rocky and muddy terrain.

Marayoor
Marayoor-Kanthaloor is a popular tourist destination. It is a flourishing space for farm tourism, sandalwood forests, national parks, and waterfalls. But there are no basic facilities like toilets or waiting sheds for tourists. The building constructed for this purpose in Kovilkadavu town is not yet operational.

Ilaveezha Poonchira
Ilaveezha Poonchira is a tourists paradise. Situated at an elevation of 3200 ft above sea level, leaves don’t shed here. There is not even a single tree in Ilaveezha Poonchira which is situated right in the middle of the three hills. You can watch some spectacular sunrises here. But that comes with a price for these tourists as there are no tidy, passable roads to reach here.

Mattupetty
Mattupetty is a popular destination among tourists visiting Munnar. It’s a stunning place filled with charming dams, picturesque meadows, and lovely boat rides. Though the distance from Munnar to Mattupetty Dam is a mere 9 km, thanks to the bumpy roads it takes at least an hour to cross it. The damaged remnants of 2018 floods still remain in these parts. A beauty like Mattupetty requires a lot of tender loving care from its authorities for sure.
