From December 1 this year, tourists from the US, Brazil, Canada and other North and South American countries will have to secure an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before they embark on a trip to Thailand. The visa-free travel facility will no longer be available to them. The countries affected are the US, Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Panama, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominica, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala. As per reports, the move is due to the increase in tourists from this region to Thailand to curb illegal immigration. The move is expected to add a layer of security for tourists and make the process more efficient using QR codes.

What is ETA
The Electronic Travel Authorisation will have to be done by all tourists entering the country via land, air or sea. Though it will be launched this year, it will be fully operational only by June of next year. The application for ETA can be made through Thailand's official e-visa portal, and interestingly, it's a free service. The ETA will be valid for 60 days. If needed, tourists can also ask for a 30-day extension, which will only be granted once.
