Kerala's popular summer spots like Munnar, Thekkady and Vagamon are overflowing with tourists these days, thanks to the rising temperatures. However, if you want to enjoy some winter vibes far from the madding crowd just for a day, there is a serene spot just about five kilometres away from Thekkady. Flanked by cardamom, clove, ginger, turmeric, pepper and coffee plantations, this little spot would be ideal for a family picnic to relax as spice-scented air refreshes you. If the farmer in you gets eager, you can even try interacting with the farmers in the region about the cultivation. 

What to see
Murikkady is known best for its mountains filled with green spice plantations. They are privately owned, and you can take a walk with permission through them, enjoying their quiet charm. If you are into photography, the place will provide an amazing backdrop to numerous nature shots too. The open meadows here can also be great for laying out a picnic and enjoying the landscape.

Activity possibilities
While Murikkady in itself is not known for many activities, it is quite close to various other tourist spots that can offer you the same. For example, many tourists trek at the nearby Periyar Tiger Reserve, Pullumedu and Pandikuzhi. Ensure you get the required permissions and guidance before venturing out for treks. Trying a hand at the Periyar Boat safari, bamboo rafting, jeep safari, spice plantation tours, kathakali shows and night jungle patrol at the Periyar forest are a few other options.

Ottakathalamedu Viewpoint, which offfers a scenic view of the Western Ghats, Elephant Junction that lets you ride, bathe, feed elephants and click pictures with them, Sathram - which has been a traditional route of Ayyappa devotees, the Periyar Tiger Reserve and Kumily are some of the other attractions near Murikkady. 
How to go
Murikkady is just about 6 km away from Kumily Bus stand. The nearest railway station is Kottayam (102 km away), but Murikkady can also be easily accessed by bus from the Kottayam bus stand in a few hours.
