Actress Anusree, who has played notable characters in many Malayalam movies, recently posted a photo online where she could be seen right in the middle of a water body at night. As a reply to many people who asked her what the location was, she posted a video. The actress said she had a great time at Sambranikodi in Kollam, an island getaway that offers boating and chances to taste amazing seafood and toddy. 'My family and I explored the region three times already in the past two weeks,' she said in the video. The island is situated on the southern side of the Ashtamudi Lake. What makes it unique is that you could take a leisurely nature walk through the shallow, cool waters surrounding the patch of land. The island, which is replete with mangroves, is now a favourite tourist spot and is on most travellers' bucket list.

A newborn island
The mesmerizing island, 350m away from the Sambranikodi shoreline, sprouted from the waters of the Ashtamudi Lake a few years ago. The island took shape as more soil accumulated at the spot where soil dredged as part of the national waterway construction was dumped. Sambranikodi boasts nine varieties of mangroves, including the yellow one. Most of the time, the island will have knee-deep water, and its beauty takes different shades with high and low tides.

Undoubtedly, Sambranikodi is the most popular tourist spot in Kollam district, and lakhs of domestic tourists have visited the island. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) runs 30-minute boat services to help people enjoy the island's raw beauty.

Try seafood and fishing
The foodies can have a great time as mouthwatering seafood delicacies are served during the boat ride. The ride also throws open a golden opportunity to know more about the lives of the fisher folk from the nearby fishing hamlets. People visiting the island, now part of DTPC, can also indulge in fishing. One could catch the boats heading to the island from Sambranikodi, Manalil and Kureepuzha boat jetties, and the tickets could be booked online. Currently, 54 boats are running services to the island in association with DTPC.
