Arppookkara: The paddy fields at Kovichal near Thomman Kavala in Kerala's Kottayam have donned a scintillating crimson hue as hundreds of water lilies have bloomed here. The flowers bloomed in these fields in huge numbers after the 2018 floods. The red and white water lilies have attracted the villagers and outsiders to the spot. Meanwhile, the blooming season may even boost the inland tourism scope of Arppookkara. Visitors throng the fields to enjoy the scintillating sight, mostly from 6 am to 9 am, as the flowers begin to droop when the sun is up. You can reach here by travelling just 100 metres on the cement road beside the NSS Karayogam building near Thomman Kavala on the Villoonni – Karippoothattu bus route. Hundreds of nature lovers reach here this year, too, to enjoy the waterlily season.
Other areas of Kottayam have also been carpeted with water lily flowers in the past few months. Kollad and Malarikkal are two different spots that welcome tourists and offer sights of water lily flowers, boat rides, and inland water cruises. Those wishing to enjoy the sight should go to these spots in the early morning.
