Idukki district is renowned the world over for its natural scenery and travellers flock to the region to enjoy sights such as hills, mist and tea gardens. Apart from the major tourism hotspots, Idukki has several little-known attractions like Madamakkulam which are equally picturesque but witness few tourists. However, these locations are popular among the local people as ideal spots for outings.
Situated near Kuttikkanam, Madamakkulam - or Madam’s pond - is interesting for its charming name as well the thrilling off-road drive that takes travellers to the spot. Madammakkulam is, in fact, a waterfall that empties itself in a pond.
There is an interesting story behind the place name. During the British rule, a foreign lady named Madam Robinson used to regularly reach the pond for a bath along with other women. Moreover, when their men went to the forest on hunting expeditions, the area near the pond was where the British women - madams- relaxed.
How to reach
From Kuttikkanam, travel one-and-a-half km on the Kattappana route and take a deviation to the left. The path ahead is a mud track and can be negotiated only by a jeep or similar off-road vehicle. All around, picturesque scenes await travellers and the drive is thrilling but not too dangerous. Suitable for a family trip, the road passes heritage bungalows and workers’ quarters. There are numerous twists and turns along the path, which finally ends at a wide view point.
From there, scores of hills clasped in mist unfold before travellers. A pile of huge rocks lie ahead and visitors have to leave their vehicles and proceed on foot.
An adventurous trek which could be somewhat exhausting takes travellers to the pond where the madams once bathed. But a dip in Madamakkulam would be refreshing.
