Kerala is replete with some breathtaking spots that are not so popular among travellers. One such destination is the enchanting Vagavanam in Idukki district. Vagavanam is near the sought-after hill-station Vagamon, and you can trek through this enchanting green paradise for just Rs 155.

If you wish to experience misty hills then set off for this captivating destination. Started your journey from early in the morning so that you reach Vadavukadu by 7.30 am. After having breakfast from Highrange Hotel, head to Kumarikulam where you can collected tickets after filling out a form and paying Rs 155 per person. A guide will take you trekking through the tranquil Vagavanam.

The first stop is the forest watch tower, which is a kilometre away. The vista from the watch tower is something out of the world. The panoramic view of the Vagamon and reservoir of Kulamavu Dam, the majestic Kizhakkalachi hills and the mountain ranges surrounding the Vagavanam from the watch tower are truly an amazing site. After enjoying this scenic beauty start trekking again before 10 am.

Vagavanam via Chillalukattu hills

Next you have to scale the Chillalukattu hills to reach the wonderful Vagavanam, and from the hills you can get a clear view of the reservoir. Lot of elephants roam around Vagavanam and hopes are high to spot at least a jumbo in the wild. There would be a nip in the air, depending on the season and after a while sun might start shining spreading comforting warmth, as noon approaches.

Venjoormedu is the valley of Kizhakkalachi hills, and your guide will inform you that Venjoormedu was the epicentre of many earthquakes in Idukki district. In 1970s, there was a place by the name of Vairamani, but the people of that area were rehabilitated in connection with the construction of Idukki Dam.

The strong winds and slight humidity is bound to exhaust you so carry a sufficient water reserve with you. You can refill water from a stream flowing through the valley.

The Kulamavu dam can be seen in the distance from the hilltop, and this is the last phase of this trek. Take a freshening dip in the cool stream and relax your tiring muscles.

The trekking, which is known as 'Windy Walk Trekking,' starts from Idukki arch dam wildlife sanctuary. The allotted time for a team along with a guide is three hours, and the trekking time is from 7 am to 3 pm.

The charges are Rs 155 for adults and Rs 50 for children. The fee for foreign nationals, including children, is Rs 305 per person. The tickets could also be reserved online at Kerala eco tourism website.
