Kumarakom is not just houseboats and lush greens. There is more to it.  Our photographer Anand Alanthara captures the beauty of the villages and the simple life they live on the Thiruvarpu – Kumarakom backwaters.

Every house has a boat. Every person here - both young and old row these small boats. And they help each other.

Water, water everywhere and then there are fields too. Coconut trees marking the boundary.

Small, young, everyone goes one place to another on a boat. And they are not scared of the rain or the water.

As the sun sets over Kumarakom, people and birds, retire for the day.

This fifth grade child is in a hurry to pick up his grandfather and head home. As he cruises the waters, his grandfather beams.

Old fashioned way of heating water for the evening bath. You will not see this often in Kerala now.

If you want to view all this, you have to take a boat ride from Kumarakom to Alappuzha
