Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Benaras, extends 6 km along the western banks of the river Ganges in Uttar Pradesh state.
The city is considered sacred by followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. There are innumerable temples in Varanasi, from ancient rock structures to modern shrines. The place is also noted for the renowned Varanasi sarees and local wrestling.
The most popular pilgrimage centre in the city is the Kashi Viswanath Temple. Around 400 festivals take place in Varanasi every year and the most important celebrations are held during Sivaratri.
The place attracts thousands of visitors every day. However, summers are often unbearable and the ideal time for a trip is during the October-March period.
