Actress Beena Antony loves travelling and finds time to travel to new places even during her busy schedules doing films and television serials. She is accompanied on the trips by her husband, actor Manoj, and son Aaromal. The journeys have given Beena many happy experiences and a few sad moments. She speaks to Onmanorama on some of her journeys.

“My most enjoyable trips were with the family. We plan trips according to our son's vacations and visiting places with husband and son gives me the most fulfilling experience,” says Beena Antony.

Favourite places

She has made numerous trips to tourist spots in Kerala as well as abroad. The most recent foreign destination Beena visited was the USA. “It was indeed a wonderland. Sights like the Niagara waterfalls were amazing. The roaring falls that spray water all around and the chilling weather were thrilling.”

Delhi is Beena's another favourite place. The Red Fort and the Taj Mahal in nearby Agra are truly awe-inspiring. One can almost feel history unravelling when visiting the spot where former prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated, says Beena.

Guruvayur

The actress loves trips to Guruvayur even though she has not been able to pray at the Sree Krishna Temple there. Beena visits Guruvayur along with her husband. But when Manoj enters the temple to pray, she waits outside, hands clasped together. Once, while Beena was praying outside the temple, a young boy approached her and said, “Krishna is certainly somewhere nearby.”

“I felt so happy hearing the comment,” she says.

People of Thrissur cherish arts and culture and visiting here offers a unique experience. The love and affection shown by the local people in Thrissur is so touching, says Beena.

Culinary journeys

Kozhikode and Kannur are also top destinations for Beena, thanks to the food available there. The taste of the dishes one can order in Kozhikode is so different. Another advantage is that one can relish original Thalassery biriyani.

“Everyone loves food. I too enjoy tasting new dishes. While visiting Kozhikode and Kannur, I often try to find the traditional items of the region,” says Beena.

The charm of Munnar

But the worst travel experience Beena had to face was a journey to Vagamon. “I have visited the place only once. We were newly-weds then. Some friends of Manoj accompanied us with their families.”

“We had prepared some fish fry with pearl spot and reached Vagamon. On the way, we bought chicken and some chapathis. After touring the sites, we reached our rooms by evening. There, we prepared the chicken and along with the fish and chapathis had a sumptuous dinner.”

Beena's troubles started soon. “I and Manoj started vomiting around midnight and by morning, we were thoroughly drained. To make matters worse, we had to attend a shooting that day.”

Beena and Manoj had to be rushed to hospital and were given injections before they headed to the location. “I have never visited Vagamon again,” says the actress, yet to recover from the shock.

Though she has been part of numerous films and television serials, Beena is now mostly engaged in serials. Many of her roles are that of a shady character or mother. “I try to give justice to any role, though I would like enact characters that bring out your real histrionic talents,” she says.

However, during the last vacation, Beena chose not to travel. It was because her mother had passed away barely nine months ago. “Mother's memories still haunt me and I am yet overcome the loss,” she concludes.
