Prime minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe visited Sidi Saiyyed Ki Jaali, a 16th-century mosque in the old city of Ahmedabad. Here's why this ancient mosque should be on your bucket list. 

The history

The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque was commissioned in 1573 when the land prospered under the Sultanate of Gujarat. The mosque was built by an Abyssinian, Sidi Saiyyed who was from Yemen and craftsmen who supported him. Soon after the completion of the mosque, the Mughal rulers took over Ahmedabad. The mosque was used as a government office during the British rule. 

What to see

The mosque is built with yellow sandstone in an Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The minarets on the sides and arched windows add to the charm of the structure. However, it is the 'jali' or the particular ornate lattice work that holds your attention. There are over half a dozen arched windows which are adorned with these intricate stone carvings. One particular carving famous as the 'tree of life' has been adopted as the logo of IIM Ahmedabad.
