On January 8, the top court quashed the remission granted by the Gujarat government to 11 convicts in the gang-rape case of Bilkis Bano and the killing of her seven family members.
Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while trying to escape the horror of the communal riots in February 2002.
Court asked the convicts to surrender before jail authorities by January 21.

The court held that the State of Gujarat was not the 'appropriate government' to decide the issue of remission as the trial was held in the State of Maharashtra.
The convicts were granted remission by the Gujarat government and released on August 15, 2022.
The petitions challenged the Gujarat government's decision to grant remission to 11 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple murders and gang rapes, during the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat.

The court said although there was consultation with the Centre for grant of remission but the state is required to apply its mind, looking at the gravity of the offence.
