The final plot of the Kannada writer's novel, which was a protest against the radical interpreters of Islam, was mysteriously changed when it was serialised in Malayalam in mid-1980s.
The book is a brilliant narrative woven around the lives of the oppressed people in the upper Kuttanad region of central Kerala.
Now in its third edition, the Prize carries an amount of Rs 25 lakh and is awarded each year to a distinguished work of fiction by an Indian writer.
