In India, all marine mammals, including the humpback dolphin (locally known as Paandan Panni), are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.
The survey estimated 6,327 Ganges river dolphins and three Indus river dolphins.
The pan-India enumeration, part of the wider "Project Dolphin", will be starting with workshops in November with field work aimed to be completed by March next year.
