World chess champion D Gukesh was given a rousing reception upon arrival in Chennai on Monday. The car that was arranged to receive the champion had special prints of Gukesh's photographs and chess pieces.

The 18-year-old was retuning home after clinching the World Chess Championship in Singapore. He defeated China's Ding Liren to become the youngest world chess champion, and only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand, to win the title.

"I'm very glad to be here. I can see the support and what it means to India," Gukesh told journalists on arrival. To the fans who had arrived in great numbers, he said: "You guys are amazing, you gave me so much energy."

The Tamil Nadu government had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 crore to Gukesh.
