Sub-junior basketball: Alappuzha girls, Kottayam boys emerge champions

Thodupuzha: Alappuzha girls and Kottayam boys emerged champions in the 49th Kerala State Sub-Junior Basketball Championships at the Shanthal Jyothi Public School, Muttom, here on Wednesday.

Thejas Tobias starred with 31 points for Alappuzha in the final as they beat Kozhikode 62-50 to retain the title.

Abhinav Suresh scored 17 points as Kottayam beat Thrissur 67-54 in the boys' final.

Thiruvananthapuram boys edged out Alappuzha 77-75 in over time in to finish third, while Kottayam girls eased past Kollam 60-21 to bag the third spot.

Thejas and Abhinav were adjudged the most valuable players.

The promising players' awards went to Theertha Praveen from Kozhikode and Aabner Alex from Thrissur. 

Brief scores (finals) Girls: Alappuzha 62 (Thejas Tobias 31, Maneesha Manoj 11, Nila Sarath 10) bt Kozhikode 50 (Theertha Praveen 13, Akshara K 12).

Boys: Kottayam 67 (Abhinav Suresh 17, Aloyshy Suresh 16, Jerry Alphonse 15) bt Thrissur 54 (Aabner Alex 21, Alberto Lijo 12, Savio K Jose 10).                 

Third-place playoff: Girls: Kottayam 60 (Anna Marium Ratheesh 18, Denia Mersa Dimal 14, Sherlin Shibu 14) bt Kollam 21.

Boys: Thiruvananthapuram 77 (Joel Jose 35, Niranjan S R 17, Midhun Raj 15) bt Alappuzha 75 (Evan John 18, Jins Gigi 16, Muhammed Yashan 13, Rexan 12) in over time.
