Kerala's two most popular football clubs have received contrasting ratings as part of the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) Academy Accreditation process.
Kozhikode-based Gokulam Kerala FC has received a three-star rating, while Kerala Blasters has only got one star. Parappur FC is the ony other club from Kerala with a three-star rating.
Bengaluru FC and Reliance Foundation Young Champs are the only two organisations in the country with five star ratings. The phase-I results published by AIFF features 80 clubs.
Gokulam said it "boasts a clear and effective player pathway, providing young athletes opportunities to progress from the academy to the senior team".
"This three-star rating is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our coaching staff, players, and everyone involved in the academy. We are proud to be fostering local talent, and this recognition strengthens our resolve to continue providing a robust pathway for young footballers in the region," said V C Praveen, President of Gokulam Kerala, in a statement.
The academy accreditation criteria includes 'training elite youth age-groups with registered players', licensed technical staff, approved curriculum and training plan, facilities and infrastructure, leagues and competitions (including Baby Leagues), talent identification and recruitment, player progression, medical provisions and administrative support among others.
A source in Kerala Blasters said the club received top marks in 'player progression' and 'facilities and infrastructure'. Academy accreditation is regarded as optional for leading clubs in the country.
