Bhubaneswar: Gokulam Kerala crashed out of the Super Cup after a 0-2 defeat to Chennaiyin FC at the Kalinga Stadium here on Tuesday.
Having lost to Mumbai City 1-2 in their tournament opener last week, Gokulam needed a win but failed to upset the Indian Super League side that scored a goal in each half. Connor Shields opened the scoring in the 25th minute and Irfan Yadwad made it 2-0 on 64 minutes.
Shields controlled Ankit Mukherjee's cross inside the Gokulam box and finished in the far corner. Gokulam failed to find the equaliser as Chennaiyin defended well.
After an hour of football, Lazar Cirkovic played a long ball into the box and Yadwad controlled it on the run before firing it in.
Gokulam were reduced to 10 men in the final ten minutes after Rishad was sent off. Gokulam will take on Punjab FC in their inconsequential final group match on January 21.
