Kerala Blasters kick-started their campaign in the 5th edition of the ISL with a bang and this impressive win over former champions Atletico de Kolkata has given a shot in the arm for yellow brigade’s legion of fans.
One question that pops up is, why only four foreign players when five could be fielded in the playing eleven?
Kerala Blasters’ coach David James says, “The usual practice in Indian football is to field as many foreign players as possible and then fill the other slots with Indian players. I wanted to buck this trend. Just see who can win matches, no matter that player is Indian or foreign, and field them.”
Turning point of the match?
The entry of C K Vineeth in the second half. Though Kerala Blasters had complete dominance in the first half, I was a tad worried and shared my concern with the team during the breather. Vineeth changed the complexion of the match and made some decisive contributions.
What was the cause of concern?
The dominance was not being converted into goals. I was also worried as the match was not progressing according to our chalked out plans for the first half. We fared quite well in the second half.
How was Lanzorate kept on a tight leash?
We had a plan for him after closely watching, through videos, his playing style.
“This win is dedicated to the victims of recent floods. In fact, we wish to dedicate the whole season to them. The fighting spirit of the Kerala society to bounce back to life is a boost for the team. ”
