Gorakhpur: Lucknow: The UP Police on Saturday "apprehended" Dr Kafeel Khan from Gorakhpur who was removed from his post in the state-run BRD hospital after 30 children died there in two days last month, a senior official said.

It was a major breakthrough, IG Special Task Force Amitabh Yash told PTI.

Kafeel Khan was removed from the post of nodal officer of the 100-bed AES ward immediately after 30 children died within a span of 48 hours at the hospital.

Khan was one of the nine people named in an FIR in connection with the horrifying incident. College principal Rajiv Mishra and his wife, Purnima Shukla, were arrested soon after the incident. However, the remaining six accused in the case have been on the run.

Khan, who went absconding after the police registered the case, was arrested from a house on the outskirts of the city. He was found guilty of not adhering to the norms of the Indian Medical Council. According to the probe report, Khan had taken leave without permission on the same day when the hospital faced shortage of oxygen supply. It was also alleged that Khan had failed to inform the seniors about the shortage in oxygen supply.

Khan, who was hailed as a savior of children after he reportedly paid for oxygen cylinders from his own pocket, was later blamed for using the cylinders from the hospital for his private practice.

As many as 1,304 kids have died at the BRD hospital this year, with 35 child deaths reported in the past 48 hours.
