Alappuzha: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday emphasised the state’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of women. Speaking at the concluding ceremony of the CPM Alappuzha district meeting, Vijayan asserted that the government adopts a zero-tolerance approach to any action undermining the dignity of womanhood.
"Women must feel safe in all public spaces. Any words, behaviour or actions that compromise their safety will face stringent action, as consistently demonstrated in Kerala," the Chief Minister stated.
Addressing the safety of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), Vijayan highlighted Kerala's proactive measures. "Kerala is among the leading states in safeguarding the rights and safety of SC/ST communities, thanks to the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) clear and principled stance," he said.
The remarks came in the context of the Pathanamthitta serial gang rape case. A minor girl from an SC/ST community was reportedly abused by over 60 men over several years, starting when she was 13. The abuse came to light when the now 18-year-old survivor disclosed her ordeal to a counsellor. Police have registered multiple cases under the POCSO Act, IPC, IT Act, and SC/ST Act, with at least 14 individuals already in judicial custody. Further arrests are underway as the investigation progresses.
On communal harmony, Vijayan affirmed Kerala's robust resistance to divisive forces. "Kerala is a land where communal forces cannot thrive. While such elements exist, the state has successfully managed them, ensuring peace and coexistence," he said.
