Kochi: Uma Thomas, who was injured in an accident during a dance programme in Kochi, is showing signs of recovery, authorities said on Wednesday. Doctors reported that she smiled and wished her children a happy New Year.

On Tuesday, Uma could move only her arms and legs, but on Wednesday, she moved her entire body, according to an update shared by the administrator of her Facebook page. Sedation and ventilator support are being gradually reduced.

A medical board convened at 10.30 am on Wednesday to assess the health status of the MLA, who continues to remain in the intensive care unit on ventilator support.

"There is progress in her condition. She is now able to recognise people and respond to instructions, alleviating immediate concerns regarding her head injury. Additionally, there is a slight improvement in her lung function," a medical bulletin on the Congress legislator said.

"Efforts to gradually reduce ventilator support have begun, but it will need to be continued until she can breathe independently," Dr Krishnanunni Polakkulath, Medical Director of Renai Medicity said in the bulletin.
