Kochi: Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas, who sustained injuries after falling from the gallery at the Kaloor International Stadium, is showing encouraging signs of recovery. According to a medical bulletin issued by Renai Medicity Hospital at 9.30 am, Thomas continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) and has made progress in recovering from her head and spinal injuries.
As part of efforts to assess brain function and consciousness, sedation was reduced, and at around 7 am on Tuesday, the patient responded positively to doctors’ instructions. She moved her arms and legs as directed and recognised and reacted to individuals within the ICU. This development marks a significant improvement in her condition.
However, her lung condition remains critical. Compared to Monday, there has been a slight improvement in her respiratory health. The patient is responding to medications and treatment, but her rib fractures, along with associated lung contusions, will require prolonged intensive care. Her vital signs are stable, but she will need ventilator support for several more days.
The accident occurred on December 29 when Uma Thomas attended the inaugural ceremony of a Bharatanatyam performance by 11,600 dancers led by actress Divya Unni, aiming for a world record. The mishap happened while she was on stage alongside Minister Saji Cherian and other dignitaries.
Dr Krishnanunni Polakulath, Medical Director at Renai Medicity, highlighted that lung contusions and internal bleeding are the primary challenges. In addition, Thomas has sustained fractures to her nasal bone, ribs, and spine. A team led by Dr TK Jayakumar, Superintendent of Kottayam Government Medical College, is providing expert advice for her treatment.
