The victim of the crime was Abdul Salam, a resident of Mogral in the Kumbla police station limits. The murder occurred at Mogral Maliankara Fort, where Salam was decapitated. The accused had also stabbed Naushad, who was with Salam, said Bekal DySP Manoj V V, who, as Kumbla Circle Inspector, investigated the case.

Public prosecutor G Chandramohan argued in the court that the murder was triggered by personal enmity. Salam had earlier tipped off the police about Siddique's sand smuggling, leading to police seizing his truck.
