The Kerala High Court has directed the Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KELSA) to collaborate with the government to devise guidelines and establish a grievance redressal mechanism for victims of animal and reptile attacks.

Justice C S Dias highlighted the rising incidence of such attacks in the state and noted the absence of comprehensive legislation to address the issue. In its order dated December 18, the court instructed KELSA and the State Government to submit details of the proposed measures by January 9.

The case stems from a petition seeking an extension of the mandate of a committee established by the Supreme Court in 2016, led by former Kerala High Court Judge Justice Siri Jagan. The committee was formed to handle complaints from dog bite victims and recommend compensation. The petitioners also requested directives for local authorities to disburse compensation based on the committee's assessments.
