The state government has established a special court for the trial in the case related to Puttingal Devi temple fireworks mishap. The Home Department issued a gazette notification as per relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Kerala civil courts act to establish an Additional District and Sessions court in Kollam. The court will commence functioning from Tuesday. The government had earlier accorded administrative sanction for the special court in June 2022.

In October 2021, the High Court noted that it was desirable to have a special court for the speedy trial and disposal of cases registered following the fireworks disaster. The Crime Branch had earlier filed a report saying that a speedy trial was required to consider the case exclusively since the nature and volume of crime was grave and huge.

Puttingal temple tragedy happened on April 10, 2016 when a competitive fireworks display went awry killing 111 people and leaving over 400 injured. The firework competition was conducted without the approval of the District Collector and a massive explosion happened on the final day of the festival at around 3.13 am. Paravur police initially registered cases against five persons including the Secretary of the Managing committee of the temple. Later cases were registered against other members of the Managing committee and workers who assisted the contractors in demonstration of fireworks.
