Kozhikode: Many residents are feared to be trapped at Vilangad in Vanimal Gram panchayat following a landslide here on Tuesday. A newly inaugurated bridge at Urutti was partially washed following the incident limiting access to landslide-hit areas, Sarada, a member of nearest ward Karukulam said at Vilangad.
''Around 75-100 persons are trapped at a place called Manjacheli. Besides some families of Vayadum colony also have to be evacuated. One person Mathew Kulathinkal is reported missing,'' Selma Raju vice president of Vanimal panchayat and ward member of Vilangad said.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has arrived in the landslide-affected Vilangad and is currently leading the rescue operations.
Rain-related damages in Kozhikode
A landslide occurred at Pashukkadavu near Kuttiady in Kozhikode after heavy rainfall overnight continued into Tuesday morning. No casualties have been reported, and residents in the area are safe, according to a press release by the district Public Relations wing.
The Chaliyar, Iruvazhinjipuzha, Poonoor, Mahe, Kuttiadi Puzha, and Cherupuzha rivers are overflowing, causing dangerous water levels. Many residents have been relocated to temporary camps set up in schools and auditoriums.
Landslips have been reported across the district, with one particularly at Kunyormala near Koyilandy putting five houses at risk. The local administration has instructed the residents of these houses to relocate.
Another heavy landslip has blocked approximately 80 metres of the Kaithappoyil-Anorammal Road near Thamarassery, resulting the relocation of seven families. In addition, 15 families from the 46th Ward in Vadakara Municipality have been moved to the Cyclone Shelter.
