Kochi: Close on the heels of a hike in prices of petrol and diesel after four months, the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic use has gone up by Rs 50. This is the biggest hike for the sought-after fuel in the last one year.
The revised price of one 14.5 kg LPG cylinder is Rs 956.50.
The LPG price has been increased after five months. In the run-up to the assembly polls in five states the Centre had not increased the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG gas for months.
The price of LPF used for commercial purpose was increased by Rs 106 earlier this month. It was, however, reduced by Rs 8 on Tuesday, thus bringing the cost down to Rs 2,000.50.
Limited subsidy
The price of LPG cylinders for domestic use had gone up to Rs 1,241 when the crude oil price went up to 110 US Dollar in 2013-14. However, the consumer did not have to bear the brunt of the hike as the central government offered a high subsidy. One had to pay just Rs 414 per cylinder, almost half of the current price.
For decades India had been subsidising LPG for domestic use. The central government stopped the LPG subsidy in July 2020. Currently, only 8 crore consumers who come under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana get subsidy.
The total number of LPG consumers in the country is 30.53 crore.
