Thiruvananthapuram: Motorists regularly passing through Kochi could heave a sigh of relief soon as two under-construction flyovers along the highway could be opened for traffic in a few months. The Vyttila and Kundannoor flyovers in Kochi city are likely be opened for traffic in March 2020.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assessed the progress of the projects that could ease huge traffic snarls. The CM has also instructed the officials concerned to complete projects at the earliest.

The cost of building the six-lane, 717-metre-long Vyttila flyover is Rs 78.37 crore. CM Pinarayi had inaugurated the construction works on December 11, 2017.

About 75 per cent of the work has been completed.

The cost of building the 750-metre-long Kundannoor flyover is Rs 74.45 crore. About 68 per cent of the construction is completed.

Along the national highway stretch here, Kundannoor is one of the big junctions with heavy traffic.

Though the National Authority of India has to build both the flyovers, the previous government had informed the Centre that it would carry out the construction.

Resultingly, the state government had to bear the full expenses of building both the flyovers, the CM pointed out.

The Vyttila flyover got delayed as not much construction happened for several months due to some controversies. Even an official-level report had said that not enough supervision was done. After which agencies such as the IIT Madras had carried out inspections but no problems were found.

The traffic situation had worsened in Vyttila and Kundannoor junctions due to delay in the flyover construction.

Meanwhile, another flyover at Palarivattom that was opened for traffic earlier could be demolished soon over weak construction if the Kerala High Court gives the nod.
