Aluva: Life in Aluva, that was badly hit in the recent floods, has turned hell for the local people after the entire town virtually turned into a giant waste dump.

The deluge submerged Aluva, throwing the waste management system completely out of gear.

Waste disposal in Kalamassery has been seriously hit by the flood and locals allege that the authorities were going slow on removing the garbage that accumulated post-floods.

Making matters worse, traders have been dumping damaged stock and garbage from their shops on the roadsides under the cover of darkness.

The Aluva Municipality has been focusing on clearing the waste from residential areas. The garbage from Thottakkattukara is being deposited on a plot along the National Highway at Seminarypady.

Only a small quantity of the garbage is being taken to Kalamassery and there is widespread criticism that the municipality is not doing enough to make the locale clean.

Local people point out that the authorities have not deployed enough earthmovers or tipper lorries for the cleaning drive.

The Aluva Merchant's Association had pledged its support to the cleaning drive.

Despite this the traders have been reluctant to cooperate with the association's drive and many of them are dumping waste on the roadsides.

It has also been alleged that apart from goods damaged during the floods, traders were dumping old spoilt stock on the roadside, spreading a nauseating stench in the town.
