Some flood-hit schools not to reopen on Wednesday

Kochi: Even as the schools across flood-ravaged Kerala are all set to reopen on Wednesday (August 29), a few institutes are still under water and those will resume classes only on September 3.
According to official sources, around 217 schools in Alappuzha will open only on September 3. All educational institutions, including professional colleges, in three taluks of Alappuzha – Kuttanad, Cherthala and Ambalapzuha - have been given holiday on Wednesday. Most of these institutions are functioning as relief camps.
Seven schools in Ernakulam district - Mulavoor Government Lower Primary School, Little Flower Lower Primary School Panayikulam, Government Higher Secondary School Ezhikkara, Government Lower Primary School Kedamangalam, Government Lower Primary School Nanthiattukunnam and Government Junior Basic School Kunnukara 7— will open only on Friday (August 31).
Schools that are functioning as relief camps in Thrissur district will not function on Wednesday and Thursday. Schools with dilapidated buildings will also not reopen now. The seven schools in Thrissur that will not open on Wednesday are - Government UP School Kuzhoor, Government UP school Arimpur, Government GJBS Cherpu, Government LPS Puthenpeedika, UP School Edamuttam, SKV LPS Eravathoor and Government LP school Pallam.

The Pathanamthitta district collector has declared a holiday for select schools in the district on Wednesday - CMS LP school Nedumbaram, GNLP school Chattankeri, Kadapra St George UP School, Manathodu Vazhi MDLP School, Kallingal MDLP school, GUP school Chumtra, Kozhencherry Mallapuzhassery MDLP school, Aranmula TKMRHS, Arattupuzha GUP school and Koyipram GHS. Rest of the schools in the state will open on August 29 after the Onam vacation.
On Monday, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said that schools should not force children in flood-affected regions to wear uniforms.
The commission also said the school management and parent-teacher associations should ensure that the school premises and classrooms were sanitised and kept in the best of conditions. Over 3 lakh children are now in the 3,000-odd relief camps across the state. The commission also wanted noon-meal officers to provide lunch for children in need.
