Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala motor vehicles department is yet to receive Rs 33 crore in unpaid fines even as a meeting of the RTOs called by the transport commissioner decided not to exempt any government vehicle from paying the fines and cancel the licences of those who have violated traffic rules more than five times.
Manorama News had released a report on people's representatives who are yet to pay their fines for speeding.
Ernakulam district accounts for the biggest chunk of unpaid fines - Rs 6 crore - while Thrissur and Kannur district have Rs 4 crore each. Rs 3 crore each has to be collected from across Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram districts. The department is in the process of sending notices to those who have broken traffic rules more than five times one more time.
According to data, at least 3,000 people are violating traffic rules daily. Twelve people have been temporarily appointed in the control room to send notices to these people. Since cameras have been installed at Vellayambalam in Thiruvananthapuram to check speeding, the number of cases reported has gone up by more than 1,000 a day.
Hence the department has handed over the job of sending notices to Keltron, which charges Rs 49 for a notice. This has forced the department to collect the fine strictly.
