Thiruvananthapuram: When it comes to traffic fines, there seems to be two sets of laws for common man and politicians in the state. While the governor paid up when he was fined once and set an example, political leaders including the chief minister have never bothered to pay their fines for dereliction of traffic rules.
The BJP president's vehicle was found to have broken traffic laws 52 times, and CPM state secretary's vehicle was caught on camera 38 times breaking the law. The chief minister's vehicle (KL 10 CB 7400) breached the speeding limit, inviting a fine of Rs 400 on June 28, 2017. The fine is yet to be paid by its owner.
CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has never paid any fine, though his vehicle (KL 01 BV 1926) had given rise to penalty 38 times in three-and-a-half years. Together with three other vehicles registered in the same name, 53 notices had been sent to Kodiyeri.

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran too was fined thrice. BJP state president's car (KL 01 BN 6115) broke traffic rules 52 times. Registered in the same name, KL 01 BQ 8035 violated traffic rules 59 times, KL 01 BQ 7563 48 times, KL 01 BZ 2623 46 times and KL 01 BQ 8074 17 times. Together he has to pay about Rs 1 lakh in fine.
Former chief minister Oommen Chandy has to pay four fines, while KPCC president M M Hassan has two in his name. Youth Congress state president Deen Kuriakose was on the wrong side of the traffic rules 22 times. RSP leader Shibu Baby John's luxury car was slapped fines 10 times.
Police personnel, who go to any length to fine common man, too haven't paid heed to notices from the motor vehicles department. State police chief's car (KL 01 BK 7422) broke traffic rules 52 times and KL 01 AK 5327, 16 times.
