Wedding called off after cops probing CPM worker's murder detain groom After the wedding got cancelled, BJP workers staged a protest in front of the Palloor police station.

Kannur: BJP workers staged a protest in front of the Palloor police station here after a wedding scheduled to be held on Sunday was cancelled ostensibly after a local youth held in connection with the murder of a CPM worker in Mahe turned out to be the groom. The youth was detained by the police on the eve of his wedding.

The police had detained the youth after the CPM local leadership named him as one of the suspects. Subsequently, his wedding scheduled for Sunday was cancelled. However, the police clarified that the youth was not taken into custody.

CPM leader Babu Kannipoyil, 42, a former municipal councillor of Mahe, was waylaid and fatally attacked by a four-member gang, allegedly by RSS-BJP workers, near his house at Palloor on May 7.

In an apparent retaliatory strike the same night, Shemaj, a 40-year-old BJP worker, was dragged out of his autorickshaw and fatally attacked by six people at New Mahe near Thalassery in Kannur district.

The killings had shattered the four-month lull in political violence involving workers of the ruling CPM, and BJP and RSS workers in Kannur.

Mahe, a former French colony, is located between Thalassery in Kannur district and Vatakara in Kozhikode district. New Mahe comes under Kannur district.

In the aftermath of the two murders, both Kerala and Puducherry police had stepped-up security in the area.
