Kochi is eve-teasers' hub, Thiruvananthapuram tops in violence against women

Kottayam: Ernakulam has the dubious distinction of reporting the most number of eve-teasing cases in the state. The state capital of Thiruvananthapuram is not far behind, having topped the list of cities where most number of people are booked for harassing women in public places.

This data was obtained from the State Crime Records Bureau of the police for 2017.

In Ernakulam, 105 cases were filed for making inappropriate comments, winking and indecent gestures at women. Of these, 51 incidents took place in Kochi city. Thrissur comes second with 65 cases. However, Kannur has only six cases.

The police had registered 4,498 cases for physically assaulting women in public places in the state, with Thiruvananthapuram topping the list with 772. Ernakulam comes second with 536 cases and Wayanad at the bottom with 150.

The number of cases that were registered against 'husbands' or their family members for harassing women stood at 2,863, as against 3,455 in 2016. Kozhikode had the most number of such cases - 372.

Thirteen women lost their lives in fight over dowry in 2017. In 2016, the figure was 25.
