Delhi police detained AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Thursday after she dumped garbage outside the residence of former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal as a mark of protest.
Maliwal, along with her supporters, collected waste from the streets of Vikaspuri, loaded it into three mini trucks, and transported it to Kejriwal’s house on Feroz Shah Road, reported PTI. Upon arrival, she began throwing garbage onto the ground before being confronted by female police officers and removed from the spot.
A large number of women holding placards that read "Muskuraiye, AAP Delhi Mein Hain" (Smile, You are in Delhi) gathered near Kejriwal’s residence at 5 Feroz Shah Road. Maliwal arrived in one of the garbage-laden trucks. Earlier, she had shared a video on X, showing herself and others collecting garbage from Vikaspuri.
"There have been heaps of garbage on the roads in Vikaspuri for years. People are very angry. They are going to collect all this garbage and dump it at Kejriwal's house," she wrote in the post. She further added, "The condition of the entire Delhi has deteriorated. The filth and stink that Delhiites face daily will be faced by Kejriwal ji today … The public is coming, Kejriwal ji, don’t be afraid."
Following the protest, security was tightened outside Kejriwal’s residence. A senior police official stated, "We have installed barricades and deployed additional personnel to maintain law and order. No one will be allowed to breach the law."
Maliwal has been at odds with the AAP leadership since last year after an alleged incident at Kejriwal’s residence, where she claimed his personal secretary mistreated her. That matter is being heard in court.
