Tbilisi/ New Delhi: Twelve Indian nationals were found dead at a restaurant in Gudauri, a mountain resort in Georgia, according to the Indian mission in Tbilisi. Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that the victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning, with no signs of injuries or violence detected during the initial inspection.

The Indian mission confirmed that all 12 victims were Indian nationals, though Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs initially reported 11 foreigners and one Georgian citizen among the deceased. All the victims, employees at the same Indian restaurant, were found in bedrooms on the second floor of the facility, reported PTI.

In a statement, the Indian mission expressed deep condolences to the victims' families and assured that they were in contact with local authorities to gather more details. The mission promised to provide all possible assistance to the families.

The local police have initiated an investigation under Article 116 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to negligent manslaughter. Preliminary findings suggest that a power generator placed indoors, possibly near the bedrooms, was turned on after the power supply was cut off on Friday night.

A forensic medical examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, and investigative actions are underway, with forensic experts and interviews of those related to the case being conducted.
