Kochi: Ponnurunni native Bindu Satyanath and her daughter Bhavana are the proud owners of a rare record. This mother-daughter duo has won gold medals for the country at the recent India-Sri Lanka Karate Open Championship held at Colombo.

Bindu, a karate instructor, knocked down gold in the 55-60 kilogram category. Meanwhile, Bhavana, who is a plus one student, won a thrilling gold in the junior category.

Bindu had begun training in karate from childhood itself. However, she quit while she was studying in class 9, after achieving brown belt. She resumed her training, years later, only when she enrolled her two daughters for karate lessons. She was able to achieve the black belt, which is the highest achievement in this extremely popular martial art form, within just a month of resuming her training. Her two daughters followed soon, and were presented with black belts.

Bindu is now an acclaimed karate trainer in town, and has little children to professionals as her disciples. The gold medalist vouches for her family's support in achieving greater heights in karate.
