In the world of ‘party animals,’ there is a one-liner that's used both as a joke and a concern - It's not a party until the Herpes virus RSVPs for life! The notoriety of the virus has also birthed memes like 'Herpes is proof what happens in Vegas doesn't just stay ever in Vegas.’ Jokes apart, the Herpes cold sores or tiny fluid-filled blisters are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), especially the HSV type 1 or HSV – 1 variety. They appear on or around the lips of the HSV-positive during fever or common cold. These blisters may also appear on the cheeks, chin or even inside the nose. These cold sores are likely to disappear within a week or two as your fever subsides.

Infection through close contact
Although the herpes cold sores are generally harmless, these can spread from person to person through close contact, especially kissing. This is why it is called the 'kiss virus,' often. The blisters may be slightly painful and can cause severe discomfort. Doctors say that the herpes simplex virus is also transmitted through close contact of the skin and that kissing is just one way of transmission. Popped blisters may be more infectious. Virus is present in the patient’s saliva and skin even if blisters or sores aren’t seen outside. So, the virus may be active in the saliva and on skin even after the blisters disappear. Besides kissing, using the patient’s lip balm, utensils, towels and razors too could be the reason for transmission.

How to handle it
Washing your hands after touching the face or the cold sores will prevent the transmission of virus to others or to other body parts. Those who suffer from frequent cold sore breakout should consult a doctor and take antiviral medicines to lower the frequency and severity of it.
