GBS: The disease that claimed life of misdiagnosed woman at Kozhikode Medical College

A 37-year-old woman lost her life allegedly following a misdiagnosis of her condition at the Kozhikode Medical College. Perambra native Rajani's relatives said that she was admitted to the hospital due to pain in her legs but was later moved to the psychiatry department by the doctors. The relatives said that Rajini had a condition called GBS, but lost her life following the wrong diagnosis. GBS, or Guillain-Barre syndrome, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a condition in which our body's immune system attacks its nerves. Those who suffer from the condition can experience weakness, numbness and paralysis in their hands and feet." In its serious form, GBS is a medical emergency," according to the Mayo Clinic. Apparently, there is no cure for the condition either, and the exact cause of the disease is also not known.
While most people can recover from the disease and start walking in six months, it can take up to many years for some. Here are a few of its other symptoms:
1) Unsteady walk, inability to climb stairs
2) Inability to move eyes, double vision
3) Rapid heart rate
4) Shortness of breath
5) Bladder control and bowel function issues
6) A tingling feeling in wrists, fingers, toes and ankles
7) A weakness in the legs that spreads to upper body parts. Cramps can get worse at night
8) Trouble with swallowing, chewing and various facial movements
