Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away after battling Acute Respiratory Tract Infection on Thursday (September 12) at the age of 72. On August 19,, he was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after complaining of high fever and pneumonia last month. He was on respiratory support for the past few days. He had also undergone a cataract surgery. His elder son had also succumbed to COVID-19 in 2021. Yechury was also hospitalised in the same year due to respiratory issues. Here are the details on what worsened his health.
ARTI causes and symptoms
According to the US National Institute of Health, Acute Respiratory Tract Infection includes Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) and Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (LRTI). Interestingly, the most common ARTIs are common cold and influenza. Generally, these infections can be short-term and can range from mild to severe, and are caused by viruses or bacteria. The common symptoms of ARTI are cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, fever, shortness of breath and chest discomfort. Its treatment depends on what caused the infection. As for Yechury, AIIMS has not disclosed the nature of the infection that affected him. However, he seems to have a long history of respiratory issues, as he was hospitalised many times over the years for similar respiratory health issues.
