Yoghurt doesn't enjoy much popularity in Kerala yet, but Kerala-made yoghurt is impressing many including the Ambanis of late. Thrissur native Nahaz Basheer's yoghurt brand ‘cremberie’ was part of Anant Ambani's pre-wedding bash feast and it also enjoys popularity among major top-notch hotels. The youngster, who did his management studies in Qatar, started a yoghurt business to tap into the love for the product among Gulf-returnee Malayalis. “ Yogurt is a sought-after delicacy in the Gulf countries, Europe and the US. Many people have yoghurt first thing in the morning. The Keralites who had lived in other countries for a long, crave yoghurt when they return to their home country,” says Nahaz, who started cremberie.com based out of Aluva.

Why is yoghurt healthy?
Milk is packed with calcium and high-quality protein. Yoghurt, which is made by fermenting milk, looks like curd, but it is tastier and more nutritious too. Doctors often prescribe probiotic medicines to patients as antibiotic usage can kill healthy gut bacteria. But probiotic foods like yoghurt can be a substitute for probiotic medicines as they can act as both food and medicine. Yogurt is prepared by fermenting milk with ‘curd culture’ (ura) containing bacteria such as streptococcus thermophilus and lactobacillus bulgaricus. People having lactose intolerance can also enjoy a scoop or two of yoghurt as lactose or milk sugar content is less in yoghurt. As yoghurt is not as sour as curd, those with acidity and ulcer issues can also have yoghurt, which is a storehouse of minerals and vitamins. The body can easily absorb yoghurt as the protein in milk is converted into amino acids after fermentation. It may be noted that yoghurt is potent enough to keep lifestyle diseases at bay.
