Social media personality Uorfi Javed is known for her over-the-top style sensibilities and attire choices. But most recently, her followers have commented on her pictures asking why her face looks swollen. Many even said it's probably because she goes overboard with her fillers. Uorfi, who confessed that she has been getting some 'usual fillers and botox since she was 18,' explained that she has "major allergies" and that her face is swollen most of the time. "I wake up like this every second day. I am always in extreme discomfort." She also said that she is on immunotherapy. However, what kind of allergies cause swellings on a person's face? Does it always have something to do with fillers or Botox? Dr Krithi Ullal, Senior Dermatologist at Lourdes Hospital, Kochi, explains:

Anything can cause allergy
According to Dr Krithi, facial swelling can be triggered by anything a person is using or has proximity to, from dust or food allergens to even beauty products. "In some cases, the patient is simply unaware of what is causing such reactions, which can be quite taxing on them. All they can do is take medications prescribed by their doctor and over the day, its effects will subside," explains Dr Krithi. Can cosmetic products like fillers or Botox cause similar allergies? Dr Krithi says if someone is allergic to it, the effects should be visible soon after they use it. "If someone has been using fillers or Botox for years without any reactions, it is unlikely that they will develop it, out of the blue," she says.

Common allergens
Many factors like airborne allergens or dust mites on beddings, food allergens, medical issues like sinusitis, contact allergies developed from skin care products, detergents and fabrics, certain medications, alcohol, tobacco, insect bites and even genetics can make a person susceptible to facial swelling. Consulting a healthcare professional can help you identify what triggers your allergy and take the right medicines that suit your body.
