It can be tempting to take shade under teak trees that are aplenty along Kerala roads during summer. However, during April and May, it can be risky and probably detrimental to your health too. During this time, defoliator moths, which consume teak leaves take over the trees and they often fall off from the leaves as well. While they do not pose a direct threat to humans, if you come in contact with their larvae, you can experience irritation or allergic reactions. If you have sensitive skin, it can also cause redness, swelling and itching. If the moths touch your clothes, they may also burst and stain the fabric.

Here's how to stay safe if there is a risk of you getting exposed to the moths:
1)If there is a chance of you spending extended time outdoors, maintain a safe distance from trees infested with moths. Also, apply skin-safe repellants to exposed skin. You can also consider wearing protective clothing that covers the skin the maximum and removing any insect residues from it once you remove them.

2)If you experience any skin irritation, seek immediate medical care. If it is not available, rinse the affected area with mild soap and water to remove any irritants. You can also use an ice pack wrapped in cloth to soothe the skin. Avoid scratching as it would increase the risk of infection.
3) Judicious use of insecticides can be considered to control moth population. However, it should be done carefully with the help of experts so that harm to beneficial insects is avoided. Light traps can also be used to reduce their numbers.
