Meitra Hospital in Kozhikode has launched a specialised dedicated Memory Clinic, which consists of a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, geriatric psychologist, neuropsychologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech-language therapist and dieticians.
The Memory Clinic is a part of the hospital's Centre for Excellence in Neurosciences that offers treatments for highly complex neurological disorders by the neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychiatrists, and rehabilitation experts from across the country.
Age-related dementia or memory loss usually happens after 65 years, when some brain cells atrophy and die. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of this though there are other conditions that can also lead to dementia.
In dementia, a significant loss of multiple domains of cognitive function leads to a person losing social and professional capacities, and becoming slowly incapable of managing his daily affairs.
If not treated in time it may progress to a stage where the affected persons may not recognise their own family members and remain incapable of feeding, bathing or dressing. It is not only terrible for the patient but for the family as well.
However, with early diagnosis followed by proper treatment, therapy and rehabilitation, dementia can be arrested or even reversed.
On the occasion of the launch of the Memory Clinic, Mr Faizal Kottikollon, Chairman, Meitra Hospital & KEF Holdings said, “Our vision at Meitra Hospital has always been to provide 360° outstanding and dedicated treatment and the best patient experience in all our Centres of Excellence - namely in Heart & Vascular Care; Neuro Sciences; Gastro Sciences; Bone, Joint & Spine; Blood Diseases, Bone Marrow Transplant; Nephro Uro Sciences & Kidney Transplantation and Cancer Care.”
