The inclusion of aquariums has become a popular trend for enhancing the aesthetic appeal of home interiors. Aquariums come in various shapes and sizes to suit different preferences. However, many individuals who initially set up an aquarium often neglect its maintenance over time. Consequently, a bad smell can permeate the living spaces, and the fish may perish. It is essential to explore the proper methods for maintaining an aquarium effectively.
Must be placed properly
An aquarium should not be placed anywhere you feel like based on the convenience of the surrounding furniture. It is recommended to choose a location that receives a minimum of one hour of moderate sunlight daily. Additionally, lighting can be arranged to ensure that the aquatic plants within the aquarium can perform photosynthesis effectively.
Right aquarium size
It is important to choose the right aquarium according to the number of fish. Adding more fish in an aquarium with limited space is harmful to them. Therefore, it is essential to opt for an aquarium that is adequately sized in relation to the number of fish you intend to keep. It is recommended to consider aquariums that are wider and shorter in design.
Tank maintenance
It is good to wash your newly acquired fish tanks using a 1% potassium permanganate solution before use. Distributing white sand within the tank, sloping gently towards the front, will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium but also help in the removal of dirt.
Aquarium water needs special attention
The water used in the aquarium must be completely clean. The best choice is to gather rainwater and pour it into the tank. If rainwater is not available, chlorinated tap water can be collected in a container and left uncovered for two to three days to allow the chlorine to dissipate. This treated water can then be added to the aquarium.
As a general rule, it is advisable to change the water in the tank regularly. The water can be maintained for a period of three to six days before a change is necessary. Also, the tank should be cleaned weekly. While cleaning, it is important to use a sponge to prevent any scratches on the glass.
Fish care
Leave the polythene cover in which the fish are brought in for some time before releasing the fish into the water. This is because the fish can die due to the sudden change in temperature. Ensure that your hands are properly sanitized before immersing them in the water. It is enough to feed the fish only once a day. Overfeeding can lead to excess food accumulating in the aquarium, which will rapidly deteriorate water quality.
