Giving a modern makeover to an old abode is often more challenging than building a brand-new house. This 25-year-old concrete house at Tirurangadi in Malappuram, Kerala had congested corridors, leaky ceiling and an insufficient supply of natural light and air. However, the family was emotionally attached to their home that was filled with special memories. So, they decided to renovate the house instead of pulling it down.

The designers focussed more on reusing the materials and rearranging the spaces rather than rebuilding. The interiors were rearranged to make the spaces vaster and roomy instead of adding new features to the structure.

The old structure lacked rain shades that protected it from the tropical weather of Kerala. Rainwater entered the house during the monsoon, damaging the walls, ceiling and the floor. The first step was to turn the elevation weather-friendly by installing a multiple-level truss roof paved with roofing tiles. A new car porch too has been added as part of the elevation.

The house, designed in 3300 sqft has a car porch, sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area and five bedrooms. The old house had many rooms that were small and congested. The redundant walls were torn down to make the interiors spacious.

The family wanted to replace their old kitchen with a modular one with a host of storage cabinets and modern facilities. Granting a tropical look to the elevation played a major role in the renovation process of this house. Meanwhile, the interiors have been rearranged in the semi-open style to overcome the spatial limitations. Adding more windows filled the interiors with golden sunshine and a pleasant ambience.

Moreover, the furnishings have been revived to grant a modern and sophisticated look to the interiors. The family is glad that they were able to achieve a scintillating look by adding more facilities without losing the soul of the house.
