The 900-square-feet house in Chembazhanty, Thiruvananthapuram, which was built 30 years ago, was ridden with a lot of inconveniences. The plot, situated below road level, was inaccessible by car, forcing the residents to climb and descend twenty steps each time they entered or left. Despite its age and inconveniences, the emotional attachment to the house prevented them from demolishing it. Hence, they decided to renovate it while preserving the existing structure.
Approaching numerous architects proved futile, as many were daunted by the site's challenges. Finally, an article on Manorama Online led them to architect Rohith and his team. With the elderly parents residing in the house and the daughter based in the Gulf, the renovation was overseen remotely.
This house can be described as having two faces. The exterior presents a traditional aesthetic, but stepping into the lower courtyard reveals its modern avatar. The layered clay tile roofing is a striking feature of the exterior. The old house, previously situated in a depression, was connected to the main road. The steep steps leading up to the house were replaced with a curved staircase, easing accessibility.
Spread across 2430 square feet, the house includes a sit-out, living room, dining area, kitchen, work area, four bedrooms, and bathrooms. The semi-open plan of the interiors creates a spacious feel. In the living room, a textured paint highlights the wall behind the TV unit. The living and dining areas feature furniture in a blue theme.
The house's lower level demanded meticulous planning for natural light and cross-ventilation. This was achieved by incorporating numerous windows and balconies attached to the rooms. Thoughtful additions cater to a comfortable retired life, including a traditional gazebo in the garden where the family can enjoy their evening tea and conversations.
The kitchen boasts plywood and laminate cabinets, complemented by granite countertops. One counter extends to serve as a breakfast table, adjacent to the work area. As desired by the client, remnants of the old house are incorporated into the new design. The family is delighted with their comfortable, renovated home.
